Woldgate’s trip to Spain started on Monday when they arrived at the airport of Málaga, they were giving a warm welcome to Andalucía and they were taken to our couch heading to their destiny: El Puerto de Santa María, where Spark is placed. After a nice journey on the roads of the South of Spain, with a stop to eat lunch together, we arrived to El Puerto (Cádiz). Students were eager to see the residence, and when they finally got there, you could perfectly see their enthusiasm to live that adventure together.
After some time to unpack, relax and get familiar with the accommodation, the chaperone took them on a tour around the city, so they could know better where they were. They saw the most important monuments of El Puerto and also its most beautiful streets, with a cultural explanation and context so they could better understand El Puerto’s fascinating history!
After this very entertaining walk, we came back to Spark to have our first barbecue together on the rooftop, with the fresh breeze and the last rays of sunlight. After that, Woldgate’s group was taken to the beach in order to have a nice picnic with their favorite snacks, so we could enjoy the nice weather and the company of each other while talking and chilling there.

The next day, after breakfast, we had our first introductory Spanish class, and we got ready to visit the market and buy the paella ingredients (using only Spanish, which they did very well!) that they would cook on Thursday with Iris, our top paella chef. After a busy time at the market, it was time to fuel up in El Cafetín with some churros con chocolate, so Woldgate could know the taste of a traditional Spanish breakfast. With lots of energy, we went afterwards to El Castillo de San Marcos, where our students took lots of photos and learned lots while traveling to the Middle Ages. When we finished our cultural activities, it was time to come back to Spark and get ready for our first proper beach day, in La Puntilla Beach. Ball games, long baths, delicious ice creams at the bar, some tanning (with lots of sunscreen), walks by the shore and much fun. After a tiring day on the beach and dinner, we saw a movie all together with the audio in Spanish, Coco, and they enjoyed it a lot and understood almost everything!

On Wednesday, after our second Spanish class, we took the ferry to go to Cádiz, the capital. We ate packed lunch together, saw the city hall, the main squares, the amazing cathedral, The Carnival’s house, in order to better understand the beauty and the meaning of celebrating Carnival and Tavira Tower, where we could enjoy the breathtaking panoramic views of the oldest city in all Europe. This was truly fascinating for them! When we finished our tour, we had spare time to go shopping and discover the different shops one can find in the city. When we came back to El Puerto, we took our students to La Puntilla Bar-Restaurant, where we could enjoy all together the most popular tapas you can find in Spain! A very complete gastronomical experience for them. Their favourites were calamares, pinchitos, croquetas and papas bravas, so it was a success to try new things. To make some time to digest the food, we took a nice evening walk by the promenade.

On our last day together, we got ready to make a rotation of activities! Woldgate students did a flamenco class on the rooftop, the paella (vegetarian, chicken and fish type) with Iris and two different Spanish classes with diverse content, activities, games and competitions. After so much done, we ate the paella that looked and tasted super professional, indeed they had a very good teacher! After this lunch, we spent the afternoon on the beach because Woldgate students could never get tired of La Puntilla Beach, they loved it. At the end of the day, an unforgettable departure ceremony took place in Spark full of laughs, surprises, emotion and fun. The Woldgate students watched a beautiful photo slideshow full of memories, got their certificates and the special ones for special achievements!

So last day very early in the morning, packing, getting everything ready to go back to the UK, and the farewell on the couch was emotional because they wanted to stay more and so did we! That’s why we hope Woldgate will come again to Spark next year 🙂

We enjoyed our time with Woldgate School here and hope it was a memorable experience for everyone.
