High School of Dundee’s trip to Spain

The recent visit of the High School of Dundee to Spark Spanish in El Puerto de Santa María was nothing short of a cultural and linguistic adventure. Led by their chaperone and teachers, the students embraced every moment of their immersive experience, participating in activities that blended language learning with cultural exploration, and creating unforgettable memories along the way.

After a long day of travel from Dundee to Málaga, the group was warmly welcomed by the Spark team. Their evening journey to El Puerto de Santa María, though tiring, was softened with a packed dinner to enjoy on the way. Once they arrived at Spark’s cozy residence, the students were given an introduction to the facilities and safety guidelines before settling in for a well-deserved rest.

The first morning kicked off with a Spanish lesson, giving the students their first opportunity to engage with the local language. With their chaperone ensuring everything ran smoothly, the group set off for a walking tour of El Puerto, a charming town brimming with history and Andalusian charm. One of the day’s highlights was a visit to the local market to buy fresh ingredients for the upcoming paella cooking class.

The students learned how to shop like locals, practicing their Spanish while choosing seafood, vegetables, and spices—a practical immersion into daily life in Spain. In the afternoon, they explored El Puerto’s castle and soaked in the beach atmosphere, enjoying some leisure time to relax and unwind. It was a full day of language in action, with students constantly switching to Spanish, guided by their teachers and chaperone.

The second day began with churros con chocolate, a sweet introduction to a typical Spanish breakfast. Energized and ready, the students took part in a rota of activities that included a paella cooking class, where they prepared and enjoyed the dish they had shopped for earlier, as well as a lively flamenco dance class, embracing the rhythm and spirit of Andalusian culture.

Later in the day, the group ventured into nature with a visit to the Los Toruños Natural Park. They explored the park by kayaking, testing both their teamwork and paddling skills. It was an excellent balance of culture, physical activity, and fun, with the students returning to the residence satisfied after a long day. The evening ended with a tapas dinner at a local restaurant, giving them a taste of Spain’s diverse cuisine.

The Sunday excursion took the group to the nearby city of Cádiz, known for its ancient history and stunning coastal views. A ferry ride across the bay set the tone for the day’s adventures. Once in Cádiz, the students toured the Roman theater and climbed the Torre Tavira, from where they could admire the panoramic views of the city. In between sightseeing, they enjoyed some shopping time, picking up souvenirs and practicing their Spanish with local vendors. Returning to Spark in the evening, the students were welcomed with a BBQ dinner and a small farewell ceremony, celebrating the friendships and experiences they had shared over the past few days.

The last day was bittersweet as the group packed their bags and prepared for their return to the UK. On the way to Málaga, they stopped for a tour of the city and visited the Alcazaba, a majestic Moorish fortress that gave them a final glimpse into the region’s rich history. With packed lunches in hand and full hearts, the students headed to the airport, reflecting on their journey. Their time at Spark Spanish had not only improved their language skills but also deepened their appreciation for Spanish culture and traditions.

Throughout the trip, the chaperone from the High School of Dundee ensured that the group stayed organized and on schedule while also creating a warm and supportive environment for the students. The collaboration between Spark Spanish and the teachers resulted in a smooth and rewarding experience for everyone involved. The students left with more than just new vocabulary—they carried home memories of paella, flamenco, churros, and Cádiz sunsets, and the sense of accomplishment that comes from stepping out of their comfort zones. Spark Spanish looks forward to welcoming more groups like the High School of Dundee for future adventures.

We enjoyed our time with High School of Dundee here and hope it was a memorable experience for everyone.
