Mexico has a bad reputation with crime. Mostly due to the various drugs routes heading North. Larger cities tend to have more of a crime element then your smaller, more rural ones. Use street sense to avoid any run-ins, stick to heavily touristy areas and use taxis instead of walking/buses/private vans if you feel threatened.
