study spanish in ecuador

Ecuador, named for being on the equator is known for having a yearly temperate climate. It has most things visitors crave, beaches, mountains and jungles. With easy flights from the US and a smooth Spanish, this country may not be the cheapest but definitely one that resembles the US in many ways(the US dollar is the country’s currency). Spanish immersion programs are found in 4 popular cities of the country: Baños, Quito, Cuenca, and Montanita.

Getting There: Most flights land in Quito or Guayaquil. Both airports are rather small and taxis  can take you to destination relatively cheap.

Accent: A bit faster than standard Spanish of Mexico or Guatemala but still clean.

Currency: Ecuador is on the dollar, thank goodness for no currency translations.

Prices: Prices are higher than Central America but still moderate if you are able to go without the extras. $200- $400 is average for a week at a hostel, families tend to be more expensive.

Popular Cities of Spanish Study:

  1. Quito- Nestled between mountains at high elevation and capital of Ecuador
  2. Cuenca- Historic center of Ecuador; UNESCO world heritage site
  3. Montanita- Surfer’s spot off the Sun Route(Routa del Sol). Very laid back surfer atmosphere.
  4. Baños- Small town known for waterfalls and hot springs
