Study Spanish in Managua, Nicaragua

Managua is the capital of Nicaragua and where approximately 35% of Nicaragua’s population lives and works. While not as strikingly beautiful as Granada and Leon, Managua does seat the house of government and  it’s location on Lake Nicaragua make it an ideal location for learning Spanish and taking in the local culture and nightlife. As attractions are its historic center, the Old Cathedral, the Palace of Culture, the Ruben Dario National Theater, the Peace Park, the ride Tiscapa Hill. Managua also acts as the go through for connections between most of Nicaragua’s other cities.

Getting There: Fly into Managua International airport. Most schools have reasonable prices for airport pickups.

Prices range from $250- $315 a week and include the following:
  • 4 hours a day of private Spanish classes per week
  • 7 days accommodation at either host family or hotel
  • 6 days of meals (if you opted for host family option)
  • free/reduced price excursions with school
  • Airport pickups (around$10-15  extra)

Safety: Managua is becoming safer and safer but caution is still advised when traveling at night and refrain from using foreign money in local transactions as to not draw undue attention.

Trips/Excursions: Managua is located on Lake Nicaragua. and has several tours covering water activities and trips to Laguna de Apoyo. In town there is Oriental Market, which claims to be the largest market in Central America, National Arboretum. For a listing of more activities, try here.
