Study Spanish in León, Nicaragua

León, located close to Nicaragua’s pacific coast (18km from the beach), has much to offer the Spanish seeker. Being much quieter, despite it’s bustling university center, the city is off most tourists radar and thus provides more opportunities to study your Spanish. León does have one claim to fame in this city of 175,000, it has more colonial churches and cathedrals per capita than any other place in Nicaragua.

Getting There: Fly in Managua International airport. It’s about an hour  and a half from León. The road from Managua can be a bit sketchy if you plan to take a bus to León, but its cheaper that the airport transfer the schools charge, $35 and up.

Prices range from $250- $315 a week and include the following:
  • 4  hours a day of private Spanish classes per week
  • 7 days accommodation at either host family or hotel
  • 6 days of meals (if you opted for host family option)
  • free/reduced price excursions with school
  • Airport pickups (around$35 extra)

Navigation: León is very walkable if you can stand the heat. You do not really need a car once there, unlike Managua. The locals get around by bicycle and walking, and if you need to get across town you can take a taxi. However, to go to the places outside the city, such as the beach, a car is convenient. Ruletos (trucks) serve as local buses (C$ 3 per ride). Taxis are C$ 10 per person anywhere in the city.

Safety: León is – by Central American standards – a safe and comfortable town. In the city center, there are some areas which are not safe to walk alone as a female at night. Groups of beggars, mostly children, congregate around popular tourist spots. Some may follow you around and some may even become verbally hostile. This behavior is usually a scare tactic.

Trips/Excursions: León has it’s fair share of churches (13 to be exact in a town) and several tours are available to marvel at their architecture and distinct styles. 30 km from the center of town lies León Viejo, the ruins of the old city destroyed by Volcano Momotombo in 1610.
